Problem Statement
What is the business problem you want to solve? What is the capability that your business requires and that your as-is can’t serve? What are the consequences today, what will the consequences be tomorrow. The problem statement needs to be crisp, concise, and blunt.
What is the result of the future state in x years, what has changed for your customers, for your shareholders, for your employees? What’s the business impact of capabilities your supply chain gained compared to the as-is. Don’t describe the journey, describe the result.
What are the main levers to address and attack the problem? What are the fundamentals that must change?
How does this link to strategic imperatives of your company? Why should your C-level pay attention at all? What if they didn’t?
Classical: Identify and quantify the tangible benefits. Be able to explain cause and effect: why does the approach have an impact on a specific KPI, what’s the logic. This determines the commercial credibility. What’s a reasonably cautious assumption on costs. How does this play out from an ROI perspective?
Who is involved, who is affected? What's in for whom on the benefits side? Who can perceive it as a threat and why? What is the plan to engage with the stakeholders?
What are business risks? What are mitigation strategies?
This is the pitch to your decision board. Start with a clear problem statement and why it matters to them. This is your hook. Then, it’s the approach, the vision, the value. The latter can be excellent, but without a hook, it’s worth nothing.
